The Islamic Community Centre is needed to be rebuilt to address the acute shortage of space which now cripples the good work of each of the centre’s six sub groups. An example is that we currently lack a dedicated area for youth activities, training rooms for skill training courses, exclusive and appropriate facilities for women and children as well as the elderly. The users of the community school and the mosque also need better and bigger facilities.
Once rebuilt, the centre will house the following facilities:
- Offices for the Islamic Community Centre - Space for a substantially increased number of worshippers - A purpose built and permanently equipped youth club - ICT and other skills training rooms - A large multi-purpose community hall - An area dedicated for the use of women and young girls for all their activities including community offices, mothers and toddler group, a crèche, meeting and activity room and their own wash room area. - A funeral parlour
The Management Committee of Islamic Community Centre worked tirelessly and secured full planning permission to build a two-storey multi-purpose building to serve the needs of Haringey’s growing Muslim community. Since the rebuilding project was launched, the community responded well and has so far raised £315,000. Despite being a small community, the level of response shows the commitment and sincerity from ordinary members of the community who aspire to build a lasting presence for North London’s Muslim community.
Young people have taken a key role in organising various fundraising activities. They have met during their spare time to brainstorm and come up with innovative ideas. This is their opportunity to contribute in a creative way and is providing them with a sense of fulfilling achievement. Below is an outline of some of the key fundraising events that have taken place so far.
Eid and Charity Dinner – 2004
This was held straight after Eid-ul-Fitr in the main mosque prayer hall. An evening of inspirational talks, nasheed from local artists, poetry and singing by children were followed by a fundraising auction. A delicious three-course meal was provided to end the evening programme. This event helped to raise awareness about the ICC rebuilding project to the local faithful.
Masjid Ayesha Charity Dinner – 2005
Haringey’s Muslim community came together, perhaps for the first time, on 24 August. In an evening of inspiration and entertainment, the Decorium Banqueting Suite in Wood Green was the venue for some 500 guests from all over Haringey and beyond.
Hosted by TV personality and activist Ajmal Masroor, guests were entertained by established nasheed artists. Nasheed rap group Mecca2Medina enraptured the younger audience with their cool Islamic rhythms and exciting new artists like Hassen Rasool demonstrated how a new, Muslim culture is flourishing. The event ended with an exciting auction of Islamic artefacts. The whole event, organised tirelessly by young people, raised over £60,000.

Volunteers needed!
ICC Rebuilding Project is run entirely by volunteers driven by their enthusiasm and passion. We always need people to join our team of volunteers to carry out various fundraising activities. We currently need people to help with distributing publicity material, administrative duties, developing ICC newsletter, approaching businesses and community members for financial support, bid writing to funding bodies and organising fundraising events. If you have some time that you can spare towards this worthy cause, please contact us with your availability. You can either email at info@icconline.org.uk or call the office on 020 8809 2137.
